The Benefits Of Spiral Freezers In Food Production Applications

When you are in the business of manufacturing perishable food products, the ability to efficiently freeze products quickly can be an important part of daily production. Food product manufacturers have relied on various types of freezing systems for years, such as the traditional tunnel freezer or standalone freezer which requires the product to be moved inside manually.

The spiral freezer is a new take on the linear tunnel freezer concept. Food moves upward in a spiral motion through an enclosed cryogenic or refrigerated chamber so it is thoroughly frozen by the time it reaches the top. Spiral Freezers Don't Have a Large Footprint 

Linear or tunnel freezers are efficient for freezing food products as they make their way on a conveyor to packaging. However, linear freezers also take up a substantial amount of space on the production floor. By contrast, spiral freezers have a conveyor that moves upward in a vertical, spiraled way.

Instead of dozens of feet of conveyor belts requiring substantial space horizontally, the spiral freezer provides just as much product accommodation in a more condensed, efficient setup. The only space required is whatever footprint the machine needs at the base and the vertical space, which can be grossly underused in a lot of facilities. For food product manufacturers that don't have a lot of space to work with, this can be incredibly important. 

Spiral Freezers Are Highly Efficient for Flash Freezing 

The vertical build and more condensed shape of the spiral freezer make it a highly efficient setup for flash-freezing food products. The encapsulated design holds more of the cold air within the freezer unit when the food is traveling through the spiraled chambers. Therefore, less energy is required to actually achieve the freezing process. With tunnel-type freezers, a lot of the cold air can dissipate as the food moves through the tunnel. 

Spiral Freezer Systems Protect Food Quality 

The climate within a spiral freezer is easier to control because of the condensed space and lack of open air. Therefore, food products that are passing through the spiral freezer are less likely to face problems like temperature variations or humidity exposure as they move through. For certain types of products, these variations cause significant quality issues. In the end, this can mean the overall quality of the food products is better protected when ran through a spiral freezer system compared to other types.
